Twitter introduces new feature ‘Quality Filter for notifications’

Twitter just introduces a new feature that will help you to filter low quality notifications from bots and spammers. This feature was more important because many users don’t like to receive notifications form users they don’t follow and it was quite irritating to receive and read those notifications. In order to use this feature, you will be able to limit the notifications and only receive notifications related to users you follow.

Twitter was getting complaints against notifications from bots and duplicate tweets from spammers, therefore company has launched this new feature. This feature will give plesent experience to users who were not happy with the spammers.

How to activate ‘Quality Filter for notifications’?

  • Go to the Notifications tab in the Twitter mobile app
  • Tap on Settings button.
  • Turn on “Quality filter.”

You can check the above video available in tweet for better explanation to on ‘Quality Filter”.

Company doesn’t say much about the algorithm implemented for this feature but Emil Leong, Product Manager wrote on the Twitter blog-

“When turned on, the filter can improve the quality of Tweets you see by using a variety of signals, such as account origin and behavior.”

Twitter also explained the quality filter in a blog post:

Last year we began testing a quality filter setting and we’re now rolling out a feature for everyone. When turned on, the filter can improve the quality of tweets you see by using a variety of signals, such as account origin and behavior. Turning it on filters lower-quality content, like duplicate tweets or content that appears to be automated, from your notifications and other parts of your Twitter experience. It does not filter content from people you follow or accounts you’ve recently interacted with—and depending on your preferences, you can turn it on or off in your notifications settings.

Company said that ‘Quality Filter’ options will roll out to all users “in the coming days.”

This filter is not going to affect your timeline as you’ve chosen to follow the people who appear in your timeline. Similarly, you will get notifications from people you follow or people you’ve recently interacted with.

I think this is a good move from Twitter.  What you say?  Post in comments.
