The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has launched a mobile app to help consumers keep a check on their internet data speed on their smartphones. Consumers will be able to check the speed of their 3G or 4G connection. The MySpeed app from TRAI checks the aggregate network quality information along with data speed, device and its location (of test) and give the users an option to send the results to the regulator’s analytics portal irrespective of the mobile or broadband service provider. Users can even do speed test for your broadband’s WiFi speed.
How does it work?
TRAI MySpeed app work and looks good. The app is smooth and UI also feels responsive and easy to use. The application is very simple and only has four tabs with no ads to display. The first tab is the speedtest page where you can check the Internet speed of a mobile 3G/4G connection or the home broadband’s Wi-Fi speed (prefers to test the Wi-Fi connection over a mobile data connection if both are active at the same time). If there are two SIM cards in the device with a data connection enabled, then the application conducts the speed test on the second SIM card only. The second tab shows past results, a list of the operator, time and download speeds.
The third one is a break-up of all the historical data, with info such as the exact location of a previous test, date, download speed, upload speed, delay in network and network reliability.This page also carries the “send to TRAI” button, which automatically sends the whole report to the regulator.The final tab has what looks like a settings gear icon which shows about the app.
While this application gives TRAI details of your data experience, sending a report to TRAI does not log a complaint. In case of poor experience, users are requested to register a complaint with their network service providers. The app does not send any personal user information, all results are reported anonymously.
Compatibility and Availability
TRAI’s MySpeed app is currently available only for Android smartphones. The app is compatible with smartphones running on Android 4.3 Jelly Bean and above. It takes up 23MB after it is installed on the phone. The MySpeed app is available as a free download. iOS users will have wait a little while before TRAI announces a launch on the appstore.
